Now might be the time to look at upgrading that video card. NVIDIA thinks so, too, and it has an offer that you can refuse but might have a hard time doing so.
While no one is going to suggest that the new consoles are more powerful than gaming PCs, they’ve started to influence PC gaming in at least one way. Both systems have huge chunks of unified memory, and new games are being designed to make use of those chunks of memory. 2 gigabytes of RAM on a video card, as crazy as it sounds, isn’t as much as it used to be. More and more, games are going to be asking for a solid 4 gigabytes. It started with games like Watch_Dogs, and is continuing with some of the hotly anticipated games coming out this year. 2 gigabytes is what you’ll need to hit the minimum requirements, while 3 and 4 gigabytes of video RAM is going to get you to the recommended requirements.
If you play PC games regularly and are looking to keep doing so this summer, moving up to a newer card might be a good way to keep your frame rate above 30. There are tons of options out there, but Nvidia is making a pretty compelling argument for their cards. Aside from having some solid benchmarks, purchasing any NVIDIA GTX 900 series card will get you a free code for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. If you opt for the higher end 970 or 980 cards, though, you’ll get a code for Batman: Arkham Asylum as well. That’s $120 in brand new games that will help you immediately push your video card.
The only caveat is that the retailer has to be participating in the promotion, as they will be the ones providing the codes. Amazon and many other big retailers are participating, so there are tons of ways to take advantage of this awesome deal.
The cards are, of course, available now. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available May 19, and Batman: Arkham Knight is available June 23.
