NASA aims to prove alien life exists within ten years

NASA thinks we will find signs of alien life in as little as 10 years—and “definitive evidence” in about 20. But it won’t be the human-hating advanced races we’ve seen depicted in Hollywood dramas. There’s a good chance this alien life will simply turn out to be microbes. Chief scientist of NASA, Ellen Stofan, made the bold claim while speaking during a panel discussion. “We know where to look,” Stofan said. “We know how to look. In most cases we have the technology and we’re on a path to implementing it. And so I think we’re definitely on the road.” We’ve seen environments all over our solar system that suggest microbial life can be supported off-Earth. Mars may have been a hotbed for activity, while Europa , Ganymede , and Enceladus have all shown evidence of environments conducive to these little microorganisms. We don’t know for sure that these moons or planets harbor life, but NASA feels these are our best shots. NASA has some aggressive plans over the next few decades to follow

OxygenOS vs. CyanogenMod 11S: Testing out battery life

We’re really close to getting our hands-on CyanogenMod 12S for the OnePlus One. But until that day comes, all of the attention is squarely on OxygenOS , OnePlus’s homemade ROM based on Android 5.0.2. So far, the new software is holding up like a champ, performing well and generally handling everyday tasks with aplomb. While that’s all well and good, how does it actually compare to the older CyanogenMod 11S in terms of battery? We ran a tests to find out. Keep in mind that this is by no means a comprehensive battery review. We’re still going through some tests and figuring out how OxygenOS will hold up over the long run. What this test does, however, is provide a base, giving us an idea of how each respective software handles a specific task. Just because Oxygen keeps a charge longer when playing video doesn’t mean it won’t run out doing simple tasks like messaging and browsing the Web. What we did is simple: We ran the same two tests on each phone, varying the control just slightly

Bing Image Search update adds features Google doesn’t offer

See full gallery on TechnoBuffalo Microsoft announced a pretty big update to Bing Image Search on Friday that may finally convince you to switch over from Google. The new and improved service is expanding to include products you can buy, extra information, content from Pinterest and more. The addition of product information is still in beta, but it looks pretty promising. Bing will offer up a list of places you can buy any particular item along the bottom of the screen. Microsoft already includes a bunch of different shopping sites, and plans to add even more soon. Even if you’re looking for pictures of something that can’t be purchased, Bing will still offer up extra information. For example, a picture of a national park is accompanied by a few details culled from World Trail Finders. Microsoft is also adding images pinned on Pinterest, more size options, and quick access to pages that host a particular picture. Finally, the update includes a general redesign that looks a lot sle

Resident Evil 5′s Steam edition can’t do splitscreen

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition recently made the jump to Steam. Just like the zombies of the series, though, Resident Evil 5 is missing something despite looking a lot like what it used to be. Resident Evil remains a splitscreen experience for many players and Capcom knows that, seeing as how Resident Evil: Revelations 2 only featured splitscreen at launch with the multiplayer getting added in at a later date. For some reason, though, Capcom decided that not to be the case with the Steam edition of Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition . When modders went into the code to find the leftover code they’d used before to make it happen, instead they found notes from the developer about the code being ripped out in the port process. Just like with Revelations 2 , Capcom’s response wasn’t to apologize for removing a feature important to some fans, but to apologize for leaving the feature in the feature list (though Capcom later resolved that ). While Capcom feels the process is too difficult to

Apple Watch: Here’s what I learned from my try-on experience

Today is not the big Apple Watch release day — you’ll have to wait a few more weeks before it’s on your wrist. You can, however, pre-order one, or, better yet, go into a store and try one on. I did. It didn’t change my life, but it did tell me a lot about what to expect when Apple’s wearable becomes available. Here are five things I learned. People are curious I had the chance to talk to a few people before the store opened, and every one of them said they simply wanted to know what the Apple Watch was like. It’s one thing to see a video demonstration , or to read a person’s opinion. You have to actually try it on and use it to really understand whether or not Apple’s device is worth having on your wrist 24/7. After a rousing round of applause from Apple’s employees, about thirty or so people were ushered into the Irvine Apple Store, with customers feverishly surrounding the displays and demo units positioned around the room. The displays were simply meant to show off the different A

OnePlus CyanogenMod 12S certified, update coming very soon

See full gallery on TechnoBuffalo The wait for CyanogenMod 12S on the OnePlus One is finally (almost) over! After failing to meet its promised late March release, the new software passed its certification on Friday. It should be arriving on smartphones around the world in the next few days, according to OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. . @jorgepenteado CM12s just passed certification today. Thanks for the patience, expect rollout in the next few days. — Carl Pei (@getpeid) April 10, 2015 CyanogenMod 12S will bring Lollipop to the OnePlus One, along with an updated version of the popular ROM. Beyond that we’re not really sure what to expect from the update, though hopefully it will be worth the wait. In the meantime, OnePlus is already offering its own OxygenOS update, which also features Android 5.0 Lollipop along with a few extra features. It offers impressive battery life, quick customization options and some new gestures controls. We’ll compare the two new ROMs head-to-head onc

Five Nights at Freddy’s is being turned into a movie

See full gallery on TechnoBuffalo The soaring popularity of Five Nights at Freddy’s apparently has executives at Warner Bros. circling for a feature-length film. Wild, right? Not really. Although the FNAF’s formula is relatively simple, the universe is rife for a Hollywood re-imagining. Fans have really taken to the game, which takes place in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza—a kind of nightmarish version of Chuck-E-Cheese. “The story really lends itself to being a movie, and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,” said FNAF’s creator, Scott Cawthon. And he’s right. There are plenty of fan theories as to what the game is really about, and even Cawthon himself has had fun with the possibilities . I don’t imagine the movie will follow the game exactly, but there’s certainly potential, and because it has such a major presence in gaming and on YouTube, there’s already familiarity. If you’ve never played Five Nights At Freddy’s , the gam
