After the reveal of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate on Tuesday, Ubisoft released a Q&A going over some crucial plot and gameplay details, clarifying some elements of the game.
The game is set during the Industrial Revolution, which we knew, but it takes place specifically in the year 1868.
The story revolves around the economic disparity created by the rise of industry in England:
Despite fueling the engine of the British Empire, workers’ lives are little more than legalized slavery while the top few percent profit from their labor. Living poor and dying young, the lower class unite in protest as a new kind of family, gangs, who turn to a life in the underworld in their struggle to survive. A struggle, until watchful Assassins come to their side and re-ignite an age-old conflict involving London’s leaders that will echo throughout modern history, from the underground up.
Revenge does not, indeed, appear to be part of the plot here, as it has been so many times before. Jacob Frye is a young man at 21 years of age, trying to do what he thinks is right to help those in need. Those of us who have made it past that age where car insurance drops know that the ideals one holds at 21 aren’t always workable in the real world, and conflicts between Jacob’s desire for justice and the way things actually work could make for some interesting character development if Ubisoft lets their writers actually write something this time around.
In addition to Jacob, his sister Evie is confirmed as playable not just in missions but in the primary open-world area of the game. The Q&A describes her as master of the “silent, swift, invisible strike,” versus Jacob’s very public fisticuffs.
The game’s title, Syndicate, comes from the concept of warring gangs. Jacob’s approach to some of the issues he sees is to build a powerful gang that can take on those in power.
Ubisoft also confirmed at points of the document that trains and steamboats will be a part of gameplay, making for that many more moving parts to jump about on.
Finally, release dates were also clarified. While the game hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 23, its PC release will be a bit later, with an as-yet-undetermined release date.
