Remember Android One? Google announced its plan to expand stock Android into emerging markets almost a year ago at Google I/O 2014. Now, the program is getting some upgraded hardware along with a more expensive starting price.
Google announced the news on Tuesday as part of Android One’s expansion into Turkey, where the new device will make its debut on May 15. The stock Android phone, which was made by Turkish firm General Mobile, starts at $260 off-contract. That’s more than twice the cost of $110 handsets already available in India and elsewhere.
The new phone packs a 5-inch 720p display, a Snapdragon 410 processor, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 4G LTE support and runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box. That’s a nice step up from the 4.5-inch models which launched last year with MediaTek processors, 5-megapixel primary cameras, 1GB of RAM each and just 4GB of built-in storage.
For now the upgraded Android One phone is likely limited to Turkey, but it may not be too long before Google expands these new spec guidelines to other markets.
