Lumia 640 XL hands-on video: A look at Microsoft’s huge new phablet

Microsoft revealed two new Windows Phone devices during Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona. We’re still waiting for its flagship Windows 10 for phones device, but these two phones will certainly hold us over in the meantime and they’re both noteworthy.

We already brought you our hands-on with the Lumia 640, and now we’re back with a first look at the Lumia 640 XL, the phablet-version of the Lumia 640. It’s bigger, yes, but it also features some enhancements. It has the same Snapdragon 400 processor under the hood, in addition to 8GB of expandable storage (you can add up to a 128GB microSD card). However, it’s also equipped with a 13-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5.7-inch 1280 x 720-pixel display.

The unit we had a chance to see had a slightly different body, too, with a more textured finish instead of the glossy polycarbonate body of the Lumia 640. Like the Lumia 640, however, the Lumia 640 XL lacks a dedicated camera button, which seems bizarre given Microsoft and Nokia’s focus on that option in the past. The screen looks OK given the price, but we’re still holding out for a new 1080p phone to replace the Lumia 1520 phablet.

The Lumia 640 XL runs Windows Phone 8.1 right now, but Microsoft promised us that it will be updated to Windows 10 for phones when the software is ready later this year. Watch the video above for a closer look.

Gears of War leakers punished by Microsoft

Footage of the Gears of War remaster currently in production leaked this week . Microsoft took swift action as a result, banning and suspending the accounts and consoles of the people who broke NDA. When you sign up to be a beta tester on very early projects like these, you sign a Nondisclosure Agreement. These NDAs are usually pretty tight and make clear what you are and aren’t allowed to talk about and what the consequences might be for breaking the agreement. In the case of these leaks, it seems that the leak actually went against not only the NDA the users in question signed when they started working with the firm handling the testing but against Microsoft’s End User License Agreement as well. The firm, VMC, sent out a letter to all its testers in the wake of the leak, stating that Microsoft has permanently disabled the Xbox Live accounts of the users in question, as well as any accounts unfortunate enough to be on the system at the time.
