All is fine in the world of Ace Attorney. The latest game in the popular lawyer franchise, The Great Ace Attorney, might not star the beloved, self-deprecating defense lawyer Phoenix Wright, but it does travel back in time to tackle some of history’s most famous legal figures, fictional or otherwise.
Wright’s distant ancestor Ryūnosuke Naruhodō travels to Europe to study law, and it is his dream to bring back more modern legal methods to the post-Meiji Revolution Japan. While in Europe though, he naturally uncovers a murder or two, must be family curse, and with the aid of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, he decides to get to the bottom of each.
Interrogation, looking for inconsistencies in testimony, reading emotions, presenting evidence. Just like in the modern age! The art of winning a legal battle hasn’t really changed much since the 19th century, has it?
Now all we have to do is wait for Capcom to localize it. Japanese studios tend not to release games so steeped in Japanese history, fearing that Western audiences might not understand the context properly, but that is an excuse I don’t really buy. Gaming geeks who love Phoenix Wright at least have some knowledge of Japan through anime and what not, enough to get us through a silly video game plot.
It’s more of a financial call, and we’ve been pretty lucky with the Nintendo 3DS games. Keep your fingers crossed for something from Capcom at E3!
