Rumor has it Apple is racing to release its own electric vehicle in an effort to compete directly with Tesla Motors. You might think the news would have Elon Musk shaking in his boots, but it turns out the Tesla CEO couldn’t be happier to have Cupertino as a rival.
Speaking at the company’s earnings call on Wednesday, Musk commented on Apple’s alleged “Project Titan” and recent reports that the two firms are engaged in an all out poaching war over engineering talent for their respective electric vehicles:
I certainly hope Apple gets into the car business. That would be great. But we’re not seeing any significant attrition of engineers to Apple, for anything. Cars or otherwise. Anyone can find this out by going on LinkedIn. If you look at the trailing 12 months, Tesla has recruited something like five times as many people from Apple as Apple has from Tesla.
Then again, Apple is apparently looking beyond Tesla for engineering talent. The company has assembled a talented team, poaching from GM, Ford, MIT Motorsports and General Dynamics as well. Even so, we’re not expecting an Apple Car until at least 2020.
In the meantime, Tesla is planning to launch its latest car, the more affordable Model 3, in March 2016, though Musk notes that it could easily be delayed until 2017.
