Microsoft on Thursday announced that its new video software, Hyperlapse Mobile, is available for Windows Phone and for Android smartphones in beta form.
The software, which carries the same name as Instagram’s product and offers similar capabilities, allows users to create very stable time lapse videos. One example Microsoft provided is a bumpy bicycle ride through a park that could be smoothed out and shortened using its apps. One might also use this while riding on a train, skiing down a mountain, or driving off road.
The software is smart, too, and it doesn’t automatically just choose specific frames when it creates a time lapse event. “Instead of just arbitrarily choosing every 10th frame, for example, the system might pick out the first, 12th, 18th and 29th frame,” Microsoft explained. “The technology also is designed to glide quickly over those times in which nothing much is happening, such as when you stop at a red light or pause for a drink of water.”
Microsoft also announced professional grade software, called Hyperlapse Pro, that can help create similar effects on a PC with footage shot by drones, and Hyperlapse for Azure Media Services, which can help developers build the tools into websites.
