Most Twitch viewers are watching just 4 games

See full gallery on TechnoBuffalo Twitch is a massively popular service and one of the fastest growing ways people consume games, with viewers watching millions of hours per day of gamers streaming all kinds of games. Well, four games. According to a study by data service gameloco.com , just four games account for nearly 60% of the hours gamers spent watching Twitch last month.  League of Legends alone accounts for 31% of the time people spent on Twitch, while Valve’s Dota 2 (another MOBA) and Counter-Strike: GO make up another 20%. Blizzard’s card game  Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft  finishes out the top 4 at about 9%. Minecraft grabs a few bites of the pie, but not a whole lot, really. The rest of the top 20 is made up of things like Bloodborne, Grand Theft Auto V,  and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare . Of any one developer, Blizzard has the most titles in the top 20 with Hearthstone , Starcraft 2 , World of Warcraft , and Diablo III: Reaper of Souls . As Blizzard is a subsid

New NASA coalition ramps up search for alien life

NASA is getting pretty serious about finding alien life, even claiming it’ll find definitive evidence in the next 20 years . To help the agency fast track its search, a new coalition is being launched that’s dedicated solely to finding “life on planets outside our solar system.” The alien-hunting group has been dubbed “NExSS,” and is designed to figure out the inner workings of exoplanets and their potential for supporting life. The discipline of studying exoplanets is actually a relatively new field; the first exoplanet around a star like our sun was only just discovered back in 1995. “The key to this effort is understanding how biology interacts with the atmosphere, geology, oceans, and interior of a planet, and how these interactions are affected by a host star,” explained NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This approach should give scientists the data they need to better understand how to identify alien life. After that, it’s just a matter of figuring out how and why. A number o

Pirate Bay co-founder won’t be playing NES in his jail cell

Fredrik Neij, a co-founder of The Pirate Bay, the massive torrent site, was arrested last year for copyright infringement. That’s okay, though. He knew how he was going to spend his free time. Really, it’s not too different from what most gamers might as for: Nintendo. All day, every day. Unfortunately for Neij, prison authorities had some issues with the request. It’s not that video games are against the rules in Swedish prisons, though. That’s actually not too uncommon. To get a piece of hardware into the prison, though, it needs to be opened up so that it can be checked for contraband items (let’s just assume Nintendo-themed shivs) hidden inside. With a DVD player or something like that, it’s not too tough, but the NES uses special security screws to prevent people from tampering with the system or getting at the hardware for piracy purposes. For this reason, the Swedish authorities chose to deny his request. Their explanation is that getting into the console without destroying i

Waze is poised to be Android Auto’s killer feature

When Google bought Waze back in 2013, we assumed the plan was to integrate all that crowdsourced traffic data into Google Maps . It turns out that may just be phase one of a broader effort to put Waze at the center of your life through direct integration with Android Auto . Google still hasn’t confirmed plans to include Waze in its dashboard operating system, but according to the Israeli firm it’s only a matter of time. Speaking to Mashable , Waze’s head of growth Di-Ann Eisnor outlined what the company has planned for Android Auto. “What I’m excited about in the future is the data the car has with the data our app has,” she said, explaining that Waze could draw information directly from the vehicle’s own sensors. “When the car can begin talking to apps like ours… it gets very very exciting.” So in the future, Waze will be able to offer traffic directions based on what other cars are reporting along with what’s happening in your own vehicle. In one example, the app tracks your fue

Microsoft Surface 3 unboxing: Your new favorite hybrid?

Microsoft’s Surface line—not to be mistaken for its Surface Pro family—bombed. The devices weren’t awful , but the RT approach failed, and wound up confusing more people than it did enlighten. It was ultimately a chapter in Microsoft’s history that the company would just rather forget . Instead of continuing down the RT path, Microsoft decided to start fresh and forge a new trail. It’s just too bad this thing is $500. The Surface 3 is a lot like Microsoft’s other Surface devices—at least in terms of design. It looks like a Surface, and feels like a Surface. Inside, however, it’s a little less Surface-y than we would have liked. Microsoft says this is a computer, sporting a full version of Windows and plenty of battery to get through a full day. But it sports an Intel Atom processor, which is even less powerful than Intel’s Core M. We haven’t spent enough time with the Surface 3 to know whether it’s a viable laptop replacement, but we’re very curious to find out. Early impressions

Dual-booting Android 5.0/Windows 10 handset headed to China

See full gallery on TechnoBuffalo Dual-booting devices that run both Android and Windows never really caught on, but one new smartphone may finally turn things around. A leaked handset from Chinese company Elephone appears to run both Android 5.0 Lollipop and Windows 10  for phones, and it packs some impressive hardware too. The unnamed device apparently offers a 2K display, 4GB of RAM, a 21-megapixel Sony camera and a fingerprint reader. A handful of leaked photos appear to reveal a sleek metal design with pretty thin bezels. We also spot a pair of slots along the side of the device, which could mean either expandable storage or dual SIM support. The new phone was first spotted at a Hong Kong trade show, where at least one poster teased the upcoming handset. Elephone isn’t exactly keeping it a secret though, and quickly confirmed to  BetaNews that the mysterious device is real. Apparently an Android-only version is set to launch next month, followed by a dual-booting model in Ju

Film Fondue: Star Trek 3 gets a title, and has an actor been chosen for Spider-Man?

Nothing was ever going to top last week’s Star Wars/Batman v Superman extravaganza, so this week was a little quieter. We still got quite a bit of news, rumors and trailers, but, by and large, this week wasn’t quite as crazy. What else? There was a new Jurassic World trailer, Fantastic Four trailer, and some information about Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One . We also brought you our review of Avengers: Age of Ultron ; did you like Jon’s review? If you did we might start making those videos more often. If you missed anything from this week, we’ll leave links down below. Below is all the stuff we thought was interesting, but didn’t get around to posting. Set photo from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Another Pirates of the Caribbean movie? The first film was great. The other three? Not as fun. There’s no indication as to whether the next Pirates will bring the franchise back to form, but I’m optimistic. They’re fun popcorn flicks that are more about the journey tha
