Waze is poised to be Android Auto’s killer feature

When Google bought Waze back in 2013, we assumed the plan was to integrate all that crowdsourced traffic data into Google Maps. It turns out that may just be phase one of a broader effort to put Waze at the center of your life through direct integration with Android Auto.

Google still hasn’t confirmed plans to include Waze in its dashboard operating system, but according to the Israeli firm it’s only a matter of time. Speaking to Mashable, Waze’s head of growth Di-Ann Eisnor outlined what the company has planned for Android Auto.

“What I’m excited about in the future is the data the car has with the data our app has,” she said, explaining that Waze could draw information directly from the vehicle’s own sensors. “When the car can begin talking to apps like ours… it gets very very exciting.”

So in the future, Waze will be able to offer traffic directions based on what other cars are reporting along with what’s happening in your own vehicle. In one example, the app tracks your fuel tank and guides you to the cheapest gas station at just the right time. Waze could also sense when your windshield wipers go up and use that information to track weather patterns.

Unfortunately, all of this is still at least a few years away. Google first needs to embed Android Auto directly into new vehicles. For now, the only way to try the software is through an aftermarket dashboard from Pioneer (pictured in the gallery above), but Google says the tech is coming from plenty of partners soon, including Acura, Audi, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Fiat, Hyundai, Kia, Jeep and more.

Tesla Model S update promises to solve “range anxiety”

Tesla announced a new update coming to its Model S car this year which should make it impossible to ever drive too far away from a charging station, at least on purpose. The company also confirmed plans to add auto-steering features later this year. Ahead of the recent event, CEO Elon Musk promised to kill “range anxiety” once and for all, describing the concern some Tesla drivers feel over whether they’ll be able to reach a charging station in time. Once the firmware update (version 6.2) hits, it will add a Range Assurance application that keeps track of your location and the nearest chargers. Comcast Xfinity Share app lets you stream video to a friend’s TV

Apple Maps may finally get public transit directions with iOS 9

A new report from  9to5Mac  says Apple Maps will finally get public transit directions along with a few other new features in iOS 9. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard similar claims , but hopefully this time the rumors are true. According to the generally reliable Mark Gurman, Apple “hopes” to include subway, bus and train directions with iOS 9. The update may add a new trip planning feature and a special public transit view as well. The company is also hoping to debut indoor mapping this year. Apple is already using small iBeacon-equipped robots to map indoor spaces, though it’s unclear if the new feature will be ready in time. Apple Maps has gotten progressively better over the past few years, but it’s still missing a key feature for anyone who lives in a city or relies on public transportation.
