Film Fondue: Star Trek 3 gets a title, and has an actor been chosen for Spider-Man?

Nothing was ever going to top last week’s Star Wars/Batman v Superman extravaganza, so this week was a little quieter. We still got quite a bit of news, rumors and trailers, but, by and large, this week wasn’t quite as crazy.

What else? There was a new Jurassic World trailer, Fantastic Four trailer, and some information about Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. We also brought you our review of Avengers: Age of Ultron; did you like Jon’s review? If you did we might start making those videos more often.

Set photo from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Another Pirates of the Caribbean movie? The first film was great. The other three? Not as fun. There’s no indication as to whether the next Pirates will bring the franchise back to form, but I’m optimistic. They’re fun popcorn flicks that are more about the journey than the destination. Galaxy Quest TV show

One of the most underrated spoofs, Galaxy Quest, has a chance of becoming a TV show. The 1999 comedy was a tongue in cheek look at the sci-fi genre, and it wound up being pretty hilarious—and the fact that it featured an ensemble cast didn’t hurt, either. The idea of a Galaxy Quest TV show is being shopped, but will there be any takers? [Variety]

 Ewan McGregor will be Lumiere in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

The Hollywood Reporter claims Ewan McGregor has been cast as Lumiere in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast live-action film. Lumiere, if you remember, is a walking, talking, smooth operating candlestick. McGregor is a charmer, so the role fits. We don’t need a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, but that’s another issue entirely. [The Hollywood Reporter]

‘Bloodshot’ and ‘Harbinger’ comics to get the Hollywood treatment

Hear me out: John Wick directors, Fast and Furious producers, and comic books. Valiant Entertainment’s Bloodshot and Harbinger comics are coming to the big screen starting in 2017 thanks to a deal signed with Sony. Both characters will get two solo movies, while the final film will bring the two together. There’s some great talent involved, including Kick-Ass 2 writer, Jeff Wadlow, so this could be good. Star Trek 3 title possibly revealed

There have been rumors that the next Star Trek movie will be about the exploration of deep space, and the supposed title for the film reflects that. Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the films, has apparently registered the title “Star Trek Beyond.” Hm, yes, deep space, beyond; it all fits. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana will reprise their roles, while Idris Elbra is being lined up for the villain role. [TrekMovie]

David Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad’ has a new cast member

Common, best known for his rap career, has apparently joined the star-studded cast of DC’s Suicide Squad. It’s unclear what role he’ll play, or if his involvement means he’ll show up in future DC films. The rapper has typically been type-cast as a kind of quiet tough guy, so perhaps he’ll have a similar role in the upcoming villain-centric movie. [The Hollywood Reporter]

A new Muppets show that’s more adult-oriented

No, I don’t mean in the explicit over 18 sense. ABC apparently wants to revive The Muppets to be a show that’s “more adult” than previous incarnations. People familiar with the matter describe the show, which could receive a straight-to-series order, as having a 30 Rock feel. That’s certainly different than the Muppets we all grew up loving. [EW]

Sony developing adaptation of The Invisible Man

The Invisible Man has already received the Hollywood treatment (a few different times), with the first film coming out all the way back in 1933. 1933! Based on a science fiction novella written by H.G. Wells and published in 1897, The Invisible Man follows a scientist who managed to turn himself invisible by changing his body’s refractive index, but couldn’t reverse the process. [Latino-Review]

Which of these actors will play Spider-Man?

Marvel Studios has already confirmed they want the next Spider-Man to be a younger, more wise-cracking boy, rather than the more mature Peter Parker we’ve seen these past few years. And this list, apparently of actors in contention to play the part, certainly reflects that approach. Nat Wolff (The Fault In Our Stars), Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), Tom Holland (The Impossible), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar) and Liam James (The Way, Way Back) are all being considered. Johnny Depp is terrifying in new Black Mass trailer

James “Whitey” Bulger is considered to be one of the most notorious gangsters in U.S. history. Played by Johnny Depp in what looks like a role that will finally take advantage of the man’s talents, Black Mass will chronicle the true story of Bulger’s exploits as an FBI informant in the 1970s. Depp looks truly terrifying, consuming the screen with his uncanny ability to transform into the character he’s portraying. Look for this one to hit on Sept. 18, 2015. [TBMovies]

Sharknado 3 gets a release date

This was inevitable. Sharknado is firmly in that “so bad, it’s good” camp, and executives are fully aware of its position in the annals of Hollywood history. They’re not good movies, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t craving more. As part of SyFy’s summer movie lineup, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! has been scheduled for a release on July 22, 2015 at 9 p.m. [TVline]

Tesla Model S update promises to solve “range anxiety”

Tesla announced a new update coming to its Model S car this year which should make it impossible to ever drive too far away from a charging station, at least on purpose. The company also confirmed plans to add auto-steering features later this year. Ahead of the recent event, CEO Elon Musk promised to kill “range anxiety” once and for all, describing the concern some Tesla drivers feel over whether they’ll be able to reach a charging station in time. Once the firmware update (version 6.2) hits, it will add a Range Assurance application that keeps track of your location and the nearest chargers. The app, which always runs in the background, will send a notification to the driver if he or she is about to wander out of range so that they can turn around in time. “This makes it effectively impossible for a Model S driver to run out of range unintentionally,” Musk said. Comcast Xfinity Share app lets you stream video to a friend’s TV

See full gallery on TechnoBuffalo Comcast just announced its own live streaming app to compete with Periscope and Meerkat . Xfinity Share is available now for Android and iOS, though it’s pretty limited at the moment. The new app lets you stream video from your smartphone straight to someone else’s phone or TV. However, you both need to be paying for Xfinity Triple Play service and have access to the company’s X1 set-top box software . Comcast is still working on rolling out X1 to many of its customers, so for now Xfinity Share’s scope will be extremely limited. Still, the potential here seems pretty obvious. Periscope and Meerkat may appeal to a younger generation, but for everyone else Comcast’s solution sounds a lot more practical. Based on the company’s own renders, you could go from watching TV to watching a live stream with just a few clicks from the remote. Down the road, Comcast also plans to offer new features that should expand what Xfinity Share can do. That include...

Apple Maps may finally get public transit directions with iOS 9

A new report from  9to5Mac  says Apple Maps will finally get public transit directions along with a few other new features in iOS 9. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard similar claims , but hopefully this time the rumors are true. According to the generally reliable Mark Gurman, Apple “hopes” to include subway, bus and train directions with iOS 9. The update may add a new trip planning feature and a special public transit view as well. The company is also hoping to debut indoor mapping this year. Apple is already using small iBeacon-equipped robots to map indoor spaces, though it’s unclear if the new feature will be ready in time. Apple Maps has gotten progressively better over the past few years, but it’s still missing a key feature for anyone who lives in a city or relies on public transportation.
