Dual-booting Android 5.0/Windows 10 handset headed to China

Dual-booting devices that run both Android and Windows never really caught on, but one new smartphone may finally turn things around. A leaked handset from Chinese company Elephone appears to run both Android 5.0 Lollipop and Windows 10 for phones, and it packs some impressive hardware too.

The unnamed device apparently offers a 2K display, 4GB of RAM, a 21-megapixel Sony camera and a fingerprint reader. A handful of leaked photos appear to reveal a sleek metal design with pretty thin bezels. We also spot a pair of slots along the side of the device, which could mean either expandable storage or dual SIM support.

The new phone was first spotted at a Hong Kong trade show, where at least one poster teased the upcoming handset. Elephone isn’t exactly keeping it a secret though, and quickly confirmed to BetaNews that the mysterious device is real. Apparently an Android-only version is set to launch next month, followed by a dual-booting model in June.

We’re not expecting the device to arrive in the U.S. anytime soon though, and not just because it’s from a pretty unknown Chinese firm. Google and Microsoft haven’t exactly been friendly to the idea of dual-booting machines, so we doubt the new phone will get much traction outside of China.

Tesla Model S update promises to solve “range anxiety”

Tesla announced a new update coming to its Model S car this year which should make it impossible to ever drive too far away from a charging station, at least on purpose. The company also confirmed plans to add auto-steering features later this year. Ahead of the recent event, CEO Elon Musk promised to kill “range anxiety” once and for all, describing the concern some Tesla drivers feel over whether they’ll be able to reach a charging station in time. Once the firmware update (version 6.2) hits, it will add a Range Assurance application that keeps track of your location and the nearest chargers. The app, which always runs in the background, will send a notification to the driver if he or she is about to wander out of range so that they can turn around in time. “This makes it effectively impossible for a Model S driver to run out of range unintentionally,” Musk said.
