Google I/O is just a few days away, and we’re expecting the company to spend a good chunk of its keynote presentation revealing plans for Android M. Luckily, it looks like we’re getting an early taste of the new operating system now, courtesy of Android Police.
The site reports that Android M will focus on battery life and RAM usage in an effort to improve overall performance. Specifically, Google may discuss new features designed to use less power, such as reducing the number of location check-ins performed. It makes sense that the next Android update will focus on fine tuning the operating system, since Google’s Material Design UI is still pretty fresh.
Android Police also notes that, similar to last year with Android L, Android M will be available as a developer preview in the near future. The official release is reportedly set for August, though we’ll likely get plenty of hands-on time with Google’s new software before then.
Based on other recent rumors, Android M may also include native support for fingerprint scanning in an effort to better compete with Apple’s Touch ID and Apple Pay. We won’t know for sure until the company makes an official announcement, but with Google I/O just a few days away it shouldn’t be long now before the news finally arrives.
