The NPD results for April are in, and we have an underdog victory happening here. The Xbox One has topped the PlayStation 4 in terms of sales, and Xbox Marketer Mike Nichols had no problem rubbing that fact in in his announcement.
“As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month. Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent.”
Sony thanked fans for their support, and reminded everyone that it “continues to lead software sales for April 2015 and PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader in the U.S.”
Nintendo mentioned that Wii U sales “increased by nearly 50 percent” year-over-year for April and overall sales have increased 15 percent in 2015. The statement also reports that Super Mario 3D World crossed the 2 million unit sales mark.
In terms of physical software, Mortal Kombat X was the clear winner of the month rivaling Grand Theft Auto V, MLB 15 The Show, Minecraft, and NBA 2K15. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D also debuted positively in the number 5 space as the highest ranking game on just a handheld platform.
Overall, hardware and software sales jumped from $580 million to $596 million over last year.
