Tesla’s new battery is supposed to change the world by putting an efficient power pack inside every home and office. It may not be that simple though, with one new report claiming the battery doesn’t actually work very well with solar power.
According to Bloomberg, even SolarCity, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk also runs, isn’t crazy about the new product. The smaller and more affordable 7kWh battery ”doesn’t really make financial sense” in the U.S., said SolarCity spokesman Jonathan Bass. That’s because American residents can simply sell the solar power they don’t use back to the utilities instead of storing it for later.
The report also notes that Tesla’s battery isn’t powerful enough to keep your entire house running off solar energy alone. Even the 10kWh model can only power a single appliance, or maybe a pair of air conditioners. The design encourages battery stacking, but there may not be a discount for buying multiple units at once.
Bloomberg suggests that the new batteries could become more practical as prices start to go down and laws change to reflect the new technology. But for now, Tesla’s latest product may not be all it’s cracked up to be.
