T-Mobile has been expanding its LTE network rapidly since it launched just a few years ago. Now the carrier has caught up to Sprint when it comes to total coverage, though it’s still trailing behind AT&T and Verizon.
The UnCarrier’s CTO Neville Ray announced the news this week while speaking at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit, FierceWireless reports. In total, T-Mobile now covers 280 million U.S. residents with 4G LTE, the same number attributed to Sprint. By comparison, AT&T and Verizon’s LTE networks currently cover roughly 308 million people each.
T-Mobile and Sprint have been competing directly for a while now, and the UnCarrier even passed its rival last summer. Back in July 2014, T-Mobile hit 230 million LTE POPs compared Sprint’s 225 million. Clearly neither company has slowed down since then.
Moving forward, T-Mobile plans to expand its retail business as well. For now the company’s stores only cover about 230 to 240 million American residents, though that number should grow significantly later this year and into 2016.
