As opposed to years past, Sony has opted not to hold a press conference at this year’s Gamescom, the largest gaming convention in the world. It is usually here that Sony makes a case for its European PlayStation business, but this year, it has instead decided to go out for a little French.
The company will jump the border from Cologone, Germany and hold its major European conference at the Paris Games Week in October. It will be the first time since 2009 that Sony will not attend Gamescom. Sony pointed towards timing and coordination with E3 2015 for its reasoning in a statement to GameSpot.
”With the changes this year of E3 taking place a week later and gamescom taking place earlier, we feel that both PlayStation and the wider industry would benefit from a major news milestone later in the year, during the most important period for gaming.”
Paris Games Week’s increase in size over the years could also be another point of its reasoning. The convention saw 250,000 people attend in 2014, and Sony probably doesn’t mind speaking to a crowd that big if it means it doesn’t have to share the stage with Microsoft in August. Why not just wait up until just before the holiday bump in October to speak alone on its own terms?
Regardless of the reasoning behind its lack of a press conference, Sony did not rule out bringing a booth to the convention. You can still expect to see its wares.
