Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 packs an impressive octa-core setup. Just a few years ago that would have sounded like overkill, but the company may already be priming a new CPU with even more cores.
According to a leaked document obtained by STJS Gadget Portal, Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 818 will be its first 10-core processor. That includes four low power cores clocked at 1.2GHz, two 1.6GHz mid-power cores, and four powerful 2GHz cores.
The news follows a similar leak from Taiwan chip-maker MediaTek, which is apparently developing its own 10-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz. That could make it the more powerful option, though Qualcomm has a solid grasp on the industry and usually packs more powerful Adreno GPUs.
Qualcomm is also prepping a Snapdragon 820, which won’t arrive until late 2015. That means the first devices using its next flagship processor will debut early next year. In the meantime, it’s possible we could see the Snapdragon 818 start to ship, though the company still hasn’t confirmed plans for the 10-core chip.
