You know that BBC-produced movie about the making of Grand Theft Auto we’ve been hearing about? Well, Rockstar heard about it, too, and they aren’t super pleased.
Rockstar has, according to a report from IGN, filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the BBC. Rockstar had the following to say via a statement to IGN:
While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project. Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC’s pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games. We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution. It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary.
The movie, currently titled Game Changer, is intended to depict the making of Grand Theft Auto, one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time, by the British developer Rockstar. Daniel Radcliffe stars as Rockstar’s Sam Houser and Bill Paxton (the guy who died in every 80s science fiction film) as the infamous lawyer Jack Thompson, and the story focuses on the conflict between the two.
The movie is presumably continuing to film, and we’re looking forward to seeing if it ever comes to light and whether it handles its subject matter respectfully or sensationally.
