The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is the most refined version of the tablet/laptop Microsoft has ever sold. The current design took years of development and was tweaked along the way as more advanced technology was made available. But what did the very first Surface prototype look like? Now we know.
During Microsoft Ignite, the company’s senior creative director Ralf Groene discussed the development process—how everything was designed in-house—and revealed a few photos of the early Surface, and what Microsoft’s goals were when building the device.
In the photos above, you’ll see a rough idea of where Microsoft was heading with the kickstand and the thin attachable keyboard, which is really just a flat piece of plastic on the prototype. It’s pretty incredible how much remains the same today, though obviously the design has received many improvements.
