Just in time for Memorial Day traffic jams on the way to the beach, Google updated its Maps application with support for traffic notifications. These aren’t just the tiny little icons letting you know that there’s an accident ahead — as if the solid dark red line wasn’t enough of a warning — but actual pop-up notifications.
Right after you input your destination and plan your route, Google Maps will now show a small pop-up alert at the bottom of the screen that lets you know about impending traffic, construction, or other obstacles along the way. If there’s anything, the software will automatically suggest alternate routes. It will also let you know if everything is clear.
The update appears to be for Android users only at this point, at least judging from the screenshots and the lack of any mention of iPhone support, but it probably won’t be long until it hits iOS as well.
