Samsung’s latest handsets won’t get Android 5.1 Lollipop until June, according to one carrier, meaning owners of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge still have some time to wait before getting features like Guest Mode, the ability to shoot RAW images, and other camera improvements.
As Samsung’s most recent flagships, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are first in line for new Android updates, but that doesn’t mean users won’t have to wait a little while for them. Samsung tweaks like TouchWiz and the many additional apps and features it offers mean new Android updates need time to be tailored to Galaxy devices.
Despite prematurely rolling out (and subsequently halting) Android 5.1 to customers on T-Mobile already, then, Samsung may make customers wait until next month for the latest Lollipop update, according to a schedule published by Canadian carrier Rogers.
Rogers notes that the dates on its update schedule are “subject to change,” so perhaps Samsung will deliver its software a little earlier. But either way, it should be well worth looking forward to — particularly for handset owners who are into photography.
If Samsung does keep us waiting until June, Android 5.1 will already feel like a slightly outdated release. Google I/O takes place later this month, and we expect to get our first glimpse and Android M — Google’s next-generation Android upgrade. However, that won’t be made available to the public until later this fall.
