Released alongside the first gameplay footage, Ubisoft showed off this character introduction video, giving us our first close-up look at protagonist Jacob Frye and some of his cool toys.
The trailer is rendered in-engine, though it’s not gameplay footage by any means. It’s more a preview of the type of person we can expect Frye to be.
Frye was born in 1847 according to the trailer, putting the game somewhere around 1875, when the Industrial Revolution was in full effect. He was raised by Assassins, apparently, which seems like a healthy way to grow up, and not that dissimilar from being raised by wolves. He’s also described as brash and reckless – not that different from every other Assassin’s Creed protagonist in that way, then. Elements of the gameplay and debut trailers give hints that he could be more interesting than Unity‘s Arno, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
Between this trailer and the gameplay trailer, we’ve seen a couple links to India, in the form of an Indian Assassin he talks to before a mission and of Jacob wielding a Kukri style blade in this trailer. England’s interaction with their Indian colonies was in full swing at this point, so it seems likely more connections will pop up. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India is set to take place in 1841, just a few years before Jacob is born, which could provide a point of crossover.
If Jacob’s sister Evie is indeed playable, we might be seeing another one of these trailers very soon.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate hits PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on Oct. 23, and on the PC on an unknown later date.
