The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have been hugely successful for Apple in China, where it is now the top smartphone vendor by market share. The company managed to squeeze past popular local brands Xiaomi and Huawei, and outpaced its top competitor, Samsung.
Apple’s market share for the first quarter of 2015 came in at 14.7 percent, according to data published by IDC recently. It was trailed by Xiaomi with a market share of 13.7 percent, Huawei at 11.4 percent, Samsung at 9.7 percent, Lenovo with an 8.3 percent share and “Others,” that contributed to the remaining 42.2 percent market share.
IDC said that 98.8 million smartphones were sold during the quarter, which marked the first time in six years that the market declined.
“China is oftentimes thought of as an emerging market but the reality is that the vast majority of phones sold in China today are smartphones, similar to other mature markets like the US, UK, Australia, and Japan,” IDC explained. “Just like these markets, convincing existing users as well as feature phone users to upgrade to new smartphones will now be the key to further growth in the China market.”
Apple stands out, however, since it sold more smartphones that even local brands that come in at more affordable prices, and often with similar designs.
