Pebble on Thursday announced a new initiative that it hopes will spur the development of smart straps for the new Pebble Time smartwatch. The company had previously announced an “open hardware accessory” platform, and now it’s putting up $1 million so that developers and other partners can make dreams become reality.
“If you have an idea and want to be part of the smartstrap revolution, this is your chance,” Pebble said in a Kickstarter update e-mail. “Get a team together, build a prototype and put your project up on a crowdfunding platform. Our team will work to help bring your idea to life.” The company said it’s going to seek out folks who might be starting other Kickstarter campaigns for smartbands to get those folks on board and backed with some cash.
The sky is the limit for what we might see. Pebble listed a few designs that are already in the works, including a modular band called Xadow that can be outfitted with NFC readers, GPS monitors, additional displays and more. Another project, dubbed Spark Electron, is working to find a way to connect smartwatches directly to wireless networks.
This is great news for Pebble backers, and it means you can expect even more functionality for the watch long after it hits the market.
