Those purchasing one of Apple’s new notebooks will have to use Windows 8 or later when setting up Boot Camp, with the refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and the all-new MacBook having dropped support for Windows 7.
Following its unveiling of the new machines on March 9, Apple has updated the Boot Camp support tables that help users establish which versions of Windows are compatible with their Mac, as noted by 9to5Mac.
Unlike some of Apple’s older machines, which support Windows releases as old as XP, the refreshed MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, and the new MacBook, are compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows 8 only.
It’s not too surprising given how old Windows 7 is now (it made its initial debut almost six years ago), and with Windows 10 coming this summer. But it will be somewhat frustrating for those who rely on a Windows 7 partition on their Mac.
Fortunately, there are some alternatives.
Applications like Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion allow users to run Windows XP and above as a virtual machine inside OS X. It’s not quite the same as having a dedicated Windows partition, of course, but it is a workaround for those who really need access to Windows 7.
